Modern day Scott County was first explored in 1774, but the area was host to aggravated Indian attacks and was abandoned three years later. It wasn’t until eighteen years later in 1792 that Scott County was formed and named after General Charles Scott. Scott County now has a population of over 48,000 residents with the majority of them living in the city limits of Georgetown. Georgetown wasn’t established until 1785 or 1786 by Reverend Elijah Craig and other Baptists from Virginia. Rev. Craig also founded a classical school which is today’s Georgetown College. Royal Spring, the largest spring in water discharged is located in Georgetown, Kentucky. It is also believed that the process to make bourbon whiskey was discovered in Georgetown.
