Rockcastle County & Mount Vernon, Kentucky

Rockcastle County was named after the Rockcastle River. Mount Vernon was settled around 1790 and much of the area was swamp land. In 1883 a railroad connected Mt. Vernon to Louisville and Knoxville. Construction of I-75 in the 1970’s drew industry to the area and the population has increased about 50%. The population of Rockcastle County was around 17,000 in 2010 with 2,000 of those residents living in Mt. Vernon.
