Mercer County & Harrodsburg, Kentucky

Mercer County was formed from parts of Lincoln County in 1786. The county was named after Revolutionary War General Hugh Mercer. The population of Mercer County is over 20,000, with over 8,000 of those residents calling Harrodsburg, Kentucky home. Harrodsburg is the oldest city in Kentucky. Harrodsburg was founded by James Harrod in 1774 and was called Harrods Town or Harrodstown. Harrods Town was abandoned the same year it was established because of violent attacks by Native Americans. It was then resettled in 1775. Mercer County is also the home to a historic landmark called Shakertown. It was once home to the Shakers, and the remainders of their community have been preserved to educate the public about the former religion.
