Lee County & Beattyville, Kentucky

Lee County was formed in 1870. No one is sure of the origin of the name, but the general consensus is that it was named after General Robert E. Lee. However, this part of Kentucky was strongly Pro-Union during the Civil War, so it’s thought that maybe it was named after Lee County, Virginia or after Henry “Light Horse Harry” Lee. Timber and coal are still economically significant in Lee County. The county seat of Lee County is Beattyville, and 2,000 of Lee County’s 7,000 residents live in Beattyville. Beattyville began implementing a plan in 2006 to bring more tourism to the area, including state of the art baseball and softball fields, as well as a 300 seat amphitheater. Lodging and restaurant business has grown since 2006 as a result.
