Garrard County & Lancaster, Kentucky

Garrard County was formed in 1797 from parts of Mercer, Lincoln, and Madison Counties. It was named after James Garrard, the governor of Kentucky from 1796-1804. The author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Harriet Beecher Stowe, visited the Kennedy Home while gathering research material for her book. There was a cabin behind the plantation house that is said to have been the inspiration behind the story. The original cabin is no longer standing, but there is talk of rebuilding one on the original site. Garrard County is also the “birthplace of prohibition”. The famous Carrie Nation was born in North Garrard where her home still stands, but is not open to the public for touring. She was known for her anti-alcohol stance and saloon-smashing campaign. She also credited with being an early advocate of women’s suffrage.

Garrard County’s population in 2010 was over 16,000 with around 4,000 of those residents living within the city limits of Lancaster, the county seat.
