Clark County was formed in 1792 from parts of Bourbon and Fayette counties. Clark County derives its name from George Rogers Clark, the leader of Kentucky during the Revolutionary War. Winchester is the largest city in Clark County. Clark County had a population of over 35,000 in 2010, with the city of Winchester holding over 18,000 of those residents. Locally, Winchester is best known as the home of the soft drink Ale-8-One. Winchester is also one of the few cities in Kentucky that still has an original drive-in. Winchester started the local Beer Cheese Festival in 2008. Beer cheese is thought to be made in Clark County for the first time in the 1940’s by John Allman. People can submit their beer cheese recipes into the annual competition to see who has the best beer cheese around. The Daniel Boone Pioneer Festival is also a big hit in Clark County. Vendors who specialize in local made arts, crafts, and goods set up in the College Park area and bring in around 30,000 visitors to Clark County each year.
