Boyle County was formed in 1842 and named after John Boyle, a U.S. Representative, Chief Justice of the Kentucky Court of Appeals, and Federal Judge for the District of Kentucky. Danville is also home to Centre College which is Kentucky’s highest nationally ranked academic institution. Centre College provides Danville with the Norton Center for the Arts. The Norton Center has famously been the home of two vice-presidential debates. The arts are very important in Boyle County. Several famous actors launched their careers at the Pioneer Playhouse. Jim Varney, John Travolta and Lee Majors all performed at the outdoor dinner theater.
