Madison County, Kentucky was established when the Transylvania Company procured 20,000 acres of land west of the Appalachian Mountains from the Cherokee Tribe in 1774. Madison County was named after James Madison, who went on to be the fourth president of the United States of America. Twenty four years later, in 1798, Richmond, Kentucky was founded by John Miller, a soldier who fought in the Revolutionary War. Berea was established in 1850, but was initially known as the Glade. The area had two churches, a tiny village and Berea College. Berea College was the only college that was integrated and coeducational in the South for about 40 years. Berea is now recognized as the Folk Arts and Crafts Capital of Kentucky.
