Jefferson County & Louisville, Kentucky

Along with Fayette and Lincoln Counties, Jefferson County was one of the original three counties divided from Virginia’s Kentucky County. Jefferson County was named after Thomas Jefferson, who was the governor of Virginia in 1780. Jefferson County is the most populous county in Kentucky with over 750,000 residents; however, the Louisville Metropolitan area has a population of around 1.3 million. Louisville is more widely known as the home of the Kentucky Derby at the world famous race track Churchill Downs. Starting off the Kentucky Derby Festival in Louisville is Thunder Over Louisville, the largest firework show in the United States. There are eleven higher learning facilities in Louisville, including the University of Kentucky’s biggest sports rival, the University of Louisville.

Louisville was named “Most Livable” large city by the U.S. Conference of Mayors in 2008 and 2012. Louisville fans around the river front into multiple, eclectic, tightly knit neighborhoods. Louisville has had a slogan, “Keep Louisville Weird” for years. Jefferson County is proud to have such a dynamic and eclectic city. For such a large city, the cost of living is very affordable. With 120 parks and counting, and over 14,000 acres of land, Louisville has been named the City of Parks. Louisville merged with Jefferson County in 2003 and the merged government is currently governed by the Louisville Metro Council. In addition to Louisville, Jefferson County has five cities that make up the Louisville-Metro area, Fairdale, Jeffersontown, Prospect, Shively, and St. Matthews.

Fairdale has a population of around 8,000 and is now considered a neighborhood within the city limits of Louisville.

Jeffersontown has a population of over 26,000. When Louisville and Jefferson County were consolidated, Jeffersontown stayed an independent city. Jeffersontown was established in the late 1700’s and was typically a rest stop for people making their way to the bigger city of Louisville. The Gaslight Festival started as a small street party in 1969, but over time grew to be a festival. The Gaslight Festival is the 5th largest in the region. Jeffersontown is a pro-business city with a workforce of at least 50,000.

The city of Prospect was settled in the 18th Century. It was considered largely agricultural until the 1960’s when subdivisions started being developed. Prospect is Kentucky’s best educated city. In 2000, the population was documented at around 4,600 people, but it has been growing residentially and with home-based businesses.

Shively was settled in the late 1700’s and named after Christian William Shively. After the end of the Prohibition Era, eight whiskey distilleries opened. Shively won the name “Lively Shively” after several high-profile, scandalous incidents that happened in the city.

St. Matthews is the 20th largest city in Kentucky. It is a major shopping hub for Louisville and the surrounding cities. The city of St. Matthews was named after the first church in the area, St. Matthew Episcopal Church. Much like the rest of Kentucky, St. Matthews started out as mainly agricultural, but with urban growth, it became more suburban. St. Matthews is home to the 2nd and 5th largest malls in Kentucky.
