Bullitt County & Shepherdsville, Kentucky

Bullitt County was formed in 1797 from parts of Jefferson and Nelson counties. One of Kentucky’s first industries was actually Bullitt’s Lick, named after Thomas Bullitt, the explorer who found the salt lick. Before Thomas Bullitt explored modern day Bullitt County, it was home to Paleo-Indians more than 10,000 years ago. Bullitt County is commonly referred to as Kentuckiana since the county is home to several commuter cities. The western fifth of the county is reserved for military training at the Fort Knox Post. Bullitt County has around 74,000 residents with around 9,000 of those residents residing in the county seat of Shepherdsville. Salt was also a major industry in Shepherdsville during its early days. Jim Beam American Outpost & Distillery offers tours to the public to learn about the history of Kentucky’s bourbon. Bullitt County is also the home to American’s longest go cart track at Kart Kountry.
