Franklin County & Frankfort, Kentucky

In 1795 Franklin County was formed from sections of Woodford, Shelby and Mercer Counties and was named after one of the most famous American inventors, Benjamin Franklin. Frankfort serves as the county seat of Franklin County and the state capital of Kentucky. As of 2010, the population of Frankfort was over 25,000. Kentucky State University was founded in Frankfort in 1886 and was originally an institution of higher learning for those of African American decent. To this day, more than half of the students enrolled are African American. The city of Frankfort is believed to have garnered the name from an event that took place sometime in the 1780’s. It is said that one of several British American pioneers, Steven Frank, was making salt at a ford in the Kentucky River when a group of Native Americans attacked and Steven Frank was killed. That area of the Kentucky River became known as “Frank’s Ford” and eventually was shortened to Frankfort. Frankfort is also home to a few major distilleries of the famous Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey, including Buffalo Trace. The Rebecca Ruth Candy Factory was established in 1919 and is still one of Frankfort’s business staples. The New Rating Guide of Life in America’s Small Cities named Frankfort one of the country’s 20 best small cities to live in. Frankfort boasts a low crime rate, is affordable, and convenient as it is close enough to a big city for all the shopping and entertainment needs, but still maintains that small town charm. Site Selection Magazine also named Frankfort as one of the top 75 small towns for corporate expansion.
